David Fells brings us up to date on the U18s game between Mansfield U18s and Notts County U18s…
An evening visit to Mansfield Town FC’s impressive John Radford & Steve Hymas Academy/training centre. Although not quite complete yet it will eventually have four full size pitches and two smaller ones. One of the full size pitches, used for tonight’s youth game is a floodlit 3G pitch – the centre is just what Notts County needs.
On to the game…
Stern Irvine, Owen Betts, Rasharn Altaf, Tyreece Kennedy-Williams
Leo Marshall, Oscar Ramirez, Corey Bucalossi, Charlie Wilde
Tyreace Palmer, Kieran Cummings
Kion Etete, Tiernan Brooks, Duncan Coden, Cameron Smith, Mazhi Simmons
Notts started the game fairly okay but after only four minutes a Mansfield free kick was cleared but only as far as the edge of the area, upon which, a Stags player sent it high into the net for a well taken goal.
The same story for Notts as in the previous two games – Notts play some attractive passing football in two thirds of the pitch but up front they are lacking any serious threat. Notts main striking threat, Kion Etete was on the bench tonight after playing for the U23/reserve team earlier in the week.
After about 30 minutes things got even worse for Notts as they were reduced to ten men when midfielder Charlie Wilde was sent off for a late tackle. This seemed a little harsh – particularly as one of the Mansfield players threw a punch in the melee that followed but wasn’t even spoken to.
Kion Etete is on for the injured Tyreece Kennedy-Williams just before the break.
HT Mansfield 1-0 Notts County
Coden Duncan came on for Kieran Cummings at the start of the second half.
Within only a couple of minutes of the restart Mansfield had increased their lead as a cross was poked in at the near post by a player getting to the near post before any of the Notts defenders.
After 55 minutes Mansfield made it 3-0 when a Stags player was brought down in the area and the resulting penalty was powerfully put away.
The presence of Kion Etete and Coden Duncan up front did make a difference in the second half as at times the pair combined well but unfortunately the chances created were either comfortably saved by the ‘keeper or were fired high or wide.
